CBSE 2025 Exam Rules Updates: What Students Must Know

CBSE releases rules every year, but students often get confused because the information is scattered and filled with technical terms. This guide explains the most confusing CBSE rules in simple, everyday language so Class 10 and Class 12 students can understand everything without stress.

1. Passing Criteria – The Rule Students Misunderstand Most

To pass a CBSE subject, a student must score:

33% in Theory

33% in Internal/Practical

33% overall

Example:

If theory = 30/80 and internal = 10/20 → Total = 40/100 → Pass

But if theory = 25/80 (less than 33%) → Fail, even if total is above 33%.

You must pass theory + internals separately.

2. Basic Maths vs Standard Maths

CBSE offers two levels of Maths:

Basic Maths

Easier

For students NOT choosing Maths in Class 11

Ideal for Arts/Humanities or Commerce without Maths

Standard Maths

Regular difficulty

Required for Science & Commerce with Maths

Can you switch from Basic to Standard later?

YES – but only by writing the Standard Level Compartment Exam.

3. Improvement Exam Rules

You can write improvement in 1 or more subjects next year.

Only better marks will be counted. (If new marks are lower, CBSE keeps older marks.)

The improvement marksheet does NOT mention the word “Improvement”.

Perfect for students who want to increase their percentage for college admissions.

4. Compartment Exam Rules

A student is placed in compartment if:

They fail 1 subject → Compartment

They fail 2 or more subjects → Fail

You get 3 chances: July, September or March (Next year)

If you pass, CBSE declares your final result as “Pass”.

5. Grace Marks Rule

CBSE can award up to 6 grace marks if:

A student misses passing by a small margin

The question paper was unexpectedly tough

Many students performed below average

Grace marks are not shown separately – they are added silently.

6. Attendance Rule Important for Class 10 & 12

Minimum attendance needed: 75%

Students below 75% can sit for exams only if CBSE approves a request due to:

Medical reasons

Sports competitions

Accident or family emergency

National/State-level events

Without approval, CBSE will not allow the student to write the exam.

7. Practical CBSE board Exam Rules

Practicals are compulsory for Science, CS, Psychology, PE, etc.

If you fail practicals → You fail the subject.

Practical is conducted by an external examiner + internal examiner.

Practical marks cannot be improved later (except through a compartment exam).

8. Revaluation & Photocopy Rules

There are three steps:

Verification of Marks

Photocopy of Answer Sheet

Revaluation (Rechecking answers)

Only subjects with written exams can be revaluated.

Marks may increase OR decrease after revaluation.

9. CBSE Result Rules

Marksheets include:

Theory marks

Practical/Internal marks

Total

Grade

Result status (Pass/Compartment)

There is no mention of failing in a specific subject if the student finally passes.

10. Migration, Duplicate Marksheets & Corrections

CBSE issues a Migration Certificate only once.

Duplicate marksheet can be applied through CBSE’s official website.

Name/date of birth corrections are allowed only with verified documents and within CBSE’s time limit.
